I was sitting in an Alaskan Airlines plane at the gate in Seattle on Thursday, heading home, when the flight attendant made the standard announcement to turn off all portable devices, including cell phones.
About two minutes later, she reminded us about turning off our cell phones and that we couldn't leave the gate until cell phones were off.
About two more minutes later, she made the cell phone announcement again. Turns out there was a guy a couple rows behind me who was ignoring the announcements and continuing to chat away on his phone.
The fourth announcement was different. The flight attendant came on the intercom, looked the offender in the eye, and said very cheerfully: "Sir, we know that phone call is very important to you. If you'll let us know how long you need, we'll talk to the tower and get this flight delayed so you may continue."
The guy sheepishly hung up his phone as everyone else clapped. We landed on time in Las Vegas.
